The Regional Authority will be promoting the Ionian Islands at Expo Dubai 2020.

The Ionian Islands Region will be promoting itself in the Arab market at Expo Dubai 2020 from 11 to 18 March with Corfu Old Town, Lefkada Lagoon, Cephalonia Geopark and Zakynthos National Park and Shipwreck Beach.

The World Expo in the UAE opened last October, eight months later than had been scheduled, and 192 countries are taking part. It is estimated that by the end of March there will have been almost 25m visitors.

Strong region

The Ionian Islands Region will be part of the Greek stand, organised by Enterprise Greece, and aims to promote itself as a strong region and secure a strong position in the competitive market, emphasising its smart, high-quality infrastructure, biodiversity and cultural identity.

Special events

There will be special events showcasing the Ionian Islands as an attractive destination for investment and tourism with their rich gastronomic and cultural character. The Regional Development Fund covered the €37,200 costs for the Ionian Islands Region to participate.

The Region will be represented by Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa and Corfu Hoteliers Association President Babis Voulgaris, representatives from large Corfu and Zakynthos hotels, Argostoli Municipality and Cephalonia Geopark and others will also be present.

Good opportunity

Rodi Kratsa said it is a joint effort by local tourist bodies to create new contacts and attract customers with a wide-ranging tourist orientation such as the Arabs. "The large tourism exhibitions, such as Berlin, were postponed due to the pandemic," Ms. Kratsa told Enimerosi. "So, we took the opportunity of participating in Expo Dubai 2020 to promote ourselves and strengthen our position in the market."

She said that large hotel units in the Ionian Islands will be promoted, which implement modern waste management systems and environmental policies. The uniqueness of the Ionian Islands environment will also be showcased, with emphasis on local gastronomy and products.
