CORFU. 40 bed linen and 10 boxes of clothing and footwear, which had been collected at the Municipality’s Green Spots.
The North Corfu Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris and the Deputy Mayor for Circular Economy, Environment and Public Relations Spyridoula Kokkali visited Corfu Prison in view of the holidays.
The Director Lambrini Stavrou, the Deputy Director Sergeant Kostas Alexakis and the Sociology Professor and Corfu Prison’s Second Chance School Director Kyriakos Kolesis welcomed them.
The Mayor and the Deputy Mayor, along with Civil Protection Supervisor Giorgos Mavropoulos, handed over 40 bed linen and 10 boxes of clothing and footwear in excellent condition for the inmates, which had been collected at the Municipality’s Green Spots.
They talked with the Director and she informed them about the prison’s operation, the difficulties and shortages they have.
The main topic of the discussion was the Second Chance School, which has been operating for four years in a modern and impressively bright room, as well as the wonderful work that the school's teachers are doing, creating the appropriate atmosphere for the inmates’ education.
The Corfu Second Chance School was established in August 2017 and, at that time, three permanent teachers from the Secondary Education were assigned there.
Towards the end of the visit, the North Corfu Municipality team visited the classroom and the library, founding member of which was the current North Corfu Mayor. It is also worth noting that the Corfu Lawyers Association has contributed significantly to the library’s evolution.
The North Corfu Mayor praised this important work and everyone’s contribution and promised another visit. He assured that the North Corfu Municipal Authority will help in every social issue related to the prison’s operation.
He also congratulated the Director and all the staff for the difficult work they are doing under these special working conditions, since it is a maximum security prison with a large number of prisoners and many peculiarities.
