CORFU. Role of Ionian Islands in the historic Battle of Lepanto remembered on anniversary.

Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Mayor Meropi Ydraiou laid a wreath at the monument to the Unknown Soldier this morning at a ceremony organised by the Ionian Islands Regional Administration for the 450th anniversary of the Battle of Nafpaktos.

The role of the Ionian Islands΄ in the historic Battle of Lepanto (1571), when the Western Christian powers defeated the Ottoman Empire fleet, is remembered on this anniversary. From next year, the ceremony will be held in Annunziata Square, where those that fell in the naval battle are buried.

The ceremony will be co-organised by Central Corfu Municipality, the Regional Administration and the Catholic Archbishopric. A monument will be erected in Annunziata Square in memory of the Europeans who lost their lives fighting against the Ottomans in the historic naval battle.
