CORFU. Deputy Mayor for Finance: The municipal authority will propose more favourable terms to the Finance Committee for the lease of the municipal boat, because it wants to serve the people.
The second tender held this morning for the lease of the municipal boat “Agios
Stefanos”, in order to start shuttle services to Vidos Island, was declared unsuccessful.
The Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Deputy Mayor for Finance Giorgos Pantelios told Enimerosi that there was no interest and another tender process will follow. “The municipal authority will propose more favourable terms to the Finance Committee for the lease of the municipal boat, because it wants to serve the people," he said." We want to satisfy the needs of the elderly, those with special needs, campers and the employees visiting the island for work."
Currently, the island can be accessed either by private boat or open-market shuttle boats that run five daily trips to Vidos Island for a fee.
In this way, the needs of children participating in a sports camp of AO Kerkyra the Athletic Club 2015 are already served, while access to the island for the youngsters who will participate in the leisure activity programme of the Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality will be provided in the same way.
Background
The operation of the municipal boat “Agios Stefanos” started as a community service for members of the public who went to Vidos Island either to enjoy a walk in the green landscape or for a swim in the blue waters. Initially, the duties of captain and crew were carried out by municipal employees as part of the Development Cooperation of the Municipality of Corfu, known as ANEDK. However, after its removal, different ways were found for the leasing of the municipal boat depending on the decisions of the municipal authorities.
