CORFU. The Society for the Protection and Promotion of Vidos is concerned about developments regaring the island and has decided to take action with information and updates.
The Society says that there are many questions and concerns about the future of the island.
"Unfortunately, our bleak predictions are being confirmed:
1. The Municipal Council has decided that for the fourth year running there will be no children's summer camp. These were always the life and 'security' of the island.
2. Vidos is inaccessible for those that don't have a boat until at least the beginning of July when, in the best case scenario, the municipal shuttle will start to operate.
3. The local authority wants to increase the price of the ticket from 2 to 3 Euros.
4. The councillor responsible for Vidos Spyros Neratzis, despite the UNANIMOUS decision in March 2019 to put a specific area on the island out to tender, has declared that the 1,000 sq.m. area which it is admitted has been trespassed on must be given to the leasing company.
At its meeting on Friday 4 June the Society for the Protection and Promotion of Vidos decided the following:
I. There must be an immediate visit and update from the Mayor.
II. We will update all the island's MPs and let them know our concerns about the apparent exclusive commercial use of the island.
III. We will meet with groups and organisations from the Old Town in order to coordinate the actions that we need to take.
IV. We will take legal action if the leasing company attempts again this year to trespass on municipal property.
V. We will organise a visit to Vidos as soon as possible for all the members and friends of our Society."
