CORFU. They were neither shooting stars nor UFOs!
The series of bright moving objects which took those who saw them by surprise were a row of satellites launched by Elon Musk's company SpaceX.
143 satellites were launched on 24 January of this year.
Elon Musk's first 60 satellites went into orbit in May, 2019 aiming to create a global 5G satellite internet network. The goal is to provide WiFi even to the remotest parts of the planet.
Starlink is a satellite internet constellation constructed by SpaceX to provide global internet coverage from space at high speeds.
The SpaceX constellation consists of thousands of mass-produced small satellites in low Earth orbit, working in combination with ground transceivers. The total cost of the Starlink 10-year project for design, construction and development is estimated to be in the region of 10bn dollars.
