CORFU. "Just do what you did in the first quarter of 2021 - ship nothing off the island! After all, Temploni is closer and cheaper!"

The head of the Kerkyra Psilla party Spyros Neratzis has expressed the conclusions he has drawn following SYDISA's recent decision, but adds that he hopes he is proved wrong.

Spyros Neratzis' statement:

"Following the government's decision, our Municipality is obliged to ship the waste in 2021 off the island! However, the local authority and the majority of the SYDISA (Solid Waste Management Association) board, ignoring the view the minority of the board has held since August 2020, has decided to give the responsibility for waste transportation to our Municipality to do as they see fit!

We now learn from SYDISA that as a result of this decision the waste transportation won't begin before the beginning of July! Until then they are hoping that the remaining 8,713 tons of waste from the three Corfu Municipalities will be moved.

Reading the SYDISA Board's decision to extend the old transport contract, we won't get into the technicalities of the matter - about which our differing views are known - but are obliged to point out the following:

1. There was a contract for the transportation of waste from the three Municipalities until 31 December 2020, but 8,713 tons were left over.

2. Their statement says: "As the shipments weren't carried out with the frequency origianally planned, with no blame attached to the contractor, the full amount of waste written in the contract wasn't shipped" And the contract was extended to 29 March 2021.

In other words:

There is a contract in place and whilst 10,500 tons of waste is produced in the period 1 January to 29 March, they say "We don't expect that the 8,713 tons will be shipped by 29 March". Of course not!! Nothing at all is being transported!!

3. SYDISA came to its decision having taken mainly the following into consideration:

- The delay there will be between "the awarding of the contract after the international invitation for tenders until the beginning of the work one month after the availability of the facility" (although in the invitation for tender they say two months!)
- "A significant amount of time is required for the completion of the  faciltiy at Akrokefalos in Temploni before it can be given to the contractor to install their equipment." (Consequently, it will be at least 3 months before the transportation can begin!)
- "There is a pressing need for continuous shipping of waste to the DIADYMA facility in Kozani" (And yet in January, February and March our waste smells wonderful and there is no pressing need to transport the waste...)

4. It was decided to have a second extension for the shipping of waste from the three Municipalities! - "..the extension of the contract until the all the waste has been shipped - estimated at 15 June - or until the facilities have been completed for the contractor chosen from the international tenders." (In other words, a 30% difference as from 15/3 to 16/6 we produce 11,450 tons but we are satisfied with 8,713 tons for our estimate!)

We can see that, like the famous Harry Houdini, based on the contract included in the new invitation for tenders, as decided by the SYDISA majority, for the period 1/1/21 to 15/6/21 19,820 tons should be shipped but with the old contract which will be implemented, based on the extension, only 8,713 tons will be transported over the same period! And with Temploni closed!

In other words:
Just do what you did in the first quarter of 2021 - ship nothing off the island! After all, Temploni is closer and cheaper!

In the hope that, at least this time, I'll be proved wrong!"
