CORFU. On International Women΄s Day Central Corfu Municipality will present awards to 4 women involved in the health sector during the pandemic.

For International Women's Day Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality will be holding a simple ceremony to present awards to 4 women involved in the health sector during the pandemic.

The ceremony is taking place at 18:30 this evening at San Giacomo Old Town Hall and awards will be presented to pulmonologists Aggeliki Pandi and Eleftheria Haini who work at the Covid-19 unit at Corfu Hospital and nurse Sofia Nikolouzou who also works at the hospital unit.

An award will also be given to the President of the Hellenic Red Cross Corfu branch Maria Dimouli, who will accept it on behalf of all the female volunteers.

The Old Town Hall will be symbolically lit up in purple.

With this symbolic gesture, the Mayor Meropi Ydraiou wishes to recognise the efforts of all the women in the health sector during the pandemic.

It was also clear that the women from the Red Cross couldn't be absent from this ceremony - the women who, in their free time offer their help to vulnerable groups and those in need and have contributed do much to the island for decades.

Message from the Mayor

The Mayor also sent a message of unity and fighting spirit for International Women's Day:

"Today we recognise women's contribution. This day gives us the opportunity internationally to focus on what women continuously offer. The struggle for equal opportunities in work and education continues in many countries at the present time and in our country we still have the significant matter of fighting violence against women.

Gender equality is the prerequisite for harmonious coexistence, sustainable development and is a sign of civilisation. There is still a lot to do and it is the duty of each one of us whichever position we find ourselves in.

So let's do our best to honour women and their contribution to society's progress and support for principles, values and the family.

Happy International Women's Day!"
