Another 2 silver medals and 2 bronze medals for Corfu athletes

ATHENS. Spyridoula Karydi and Panayiotis Matzouroyiannis won silver in the long jump and Spyros Doukatelis and Giorgos Dosis bronze in the 200m and high jump.

The 35th Greek National Indoor Athletics Championships at the Peace & Friendship Stadium finished on Saturday 13 February with Corfu athletes winning another four medals.

Spyridoula Karydi and Panayiotis Matzouroyiannis won silver in the long jump and Spyros Doukatelis and Giorgos Dosis bronze in the 200m and high jump.

In the long jump Spyridoula Karydi was up against the top Greek long jumper and and triple jumper Voula Papachristou, who won with 6.23 metres. Spyridoula came second with 6.13m.

In the 200 metres Spyros Doukatelis reached the final with the 3rd best time in the heats of 22.09. In the final he came third with 22.03.

17-year-old Iro Vradi from Corfu was the youngest participant in the women's pole vault final and was up against the Olympic gold medallist and world champion Katerina Stefanidou as well as the top athlete Polak. Iro came to the championships to gain valuable experience and to try and achieve 3.65 metres, which is the qualifying height to take part in the European Under 18 Championships in Italy. She could only manage 3.45m, however, and finished in 7th place.

In the men's high jump final there were 5 Greeks (one 21-year-old and the others all under 20) and one athlete from Cyprus. Amongst them was Giorgos Dosis from Corfu, who won the bronze medal with 1.93m behind the winner Konstantinos from Cyprus with 2.20m.

In the men's long jump Corfiot Panayiotis Matzouroyiannis wanted to break his own personal indoor record of 7.69m and came very close with 7.62m, which gave him the silver medal behind Tentoglou with 8.00m.
