46,000 meals at Corfu food kitchens over the last year

CORFU. Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Local Council Presidents received gift vouchers for the purchase of food and basic necessities.

Mayor Meropi Ydraiou handed over gift vouchers for the purchase of food and basic necessities to Local Council Presidents for them to pass on to families in need.

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor Andreas Skoupouras handed over the vouchers to support two families per local community as part of efforts to help those in need in the festive period. The presidents thanked Ms. Ydraiou for this initiative and the Deputy Mayor for organising it, commenting that this was the first time this had happened. The mayor responded that, as much as possible, there will be similar initiatives in the future.

Deputy Mayor for Social Welfare Andreas Skoupouras said that there had been several projects this past year and emphasis had been placed on assisting those in financial need.

The Deputy Mayor gave a rundown of what had been done this year including the fact that approximately 46,000 meals had been distributed.

- The Association for large families was given gift vouchers worth €1,000 plus food to the value of €1,000

- Via the AB Vassilopoulos 'All Together We Can Do It' programme, in the period September - December 2020 gift vouchers worth €12,272 were distributed to 104 families.

- Grants were given by the Niarchos Foundation via the Central Union of Greek Municipalities (KEDE) and in collaboration with Metro, Ikos, Coca Cola and PEDIN. These were given to 110 beneficiaries and Municipal facilities.

- Foodstuffs worth €2,500 were given to Municipal food kitchens and community shops. These operate in conjunction with the Social Cooperative 'New Horizons'. which collaborates with Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality. 340 families are the beneficiaries.

- At the food kitchens 46,000 meals were given to 130 beneficiaries and at the community shops 46,500 food items to 200 families.

Deputy Mayor Andreas Skoupouros said, "The needs are great and the efforts that we are making are focussing as far as possible on the financially weaker members of the community."
