CORFU. Protests by Corfu school pupils are escalating and there were several junior high and high schools that didn΄t open today (28/9) because of health conditions.

The week has begun with escalating protests as an increasing number of Corfu pupils are demanding better health conditions at schools.

The sit-in at the 1st and 2nd High Schools may have ended (the 1st will open tomorrow, Tuesday, to allow time for the schools to be cleaned and any damage recorded and the 2nd will open properly on Tuesday, although there will be lessons from 12:00 today, according to the school administration), but an increasing number of pupils at several Corfu junior high and high schools are also protesting.

Sit-ins have begun today, Monday 28 September, at Corfu1st and 5th Junior High Schools, which occupy the same building, as well as at the 3rd and 4th Junior Highs, which haven't opened today. A group of pupils has blockaded the entrance to the two schools.

The 1st Junior High School administration said last Wednesday that the number of cleaning staff will be increased following assurances from the local authority. Parents, however, have planned a protest today at the Regional Education Department.

It seems the situation has changed at the 5th Junior High - last week the school administration said that EODY protocols were being followed and there was no cleaning problem and no need for protests - as the school didn't open today.

The Principal of the 3rd Junior High Miltiades Melissas told Enimerosi that there wasn't a cleaning problem as the building which houses the 3rd and 4th Junior Highs has 4 cleaners, 2 of which are full-time. According to the Principal, the vast majority of parents are against the sit-ins and efforts are underway to convince the pupils.

Other schools where lessons are now not taking place are the Vocational High School in Mantouki and the General High School.
