΄Friends of Vidos΄ or ΄Vidos Angels΄: who will save Vidos Island?

Vidos Island

CORFU. While former members of the local authority (Kourkoulos, Michalef, Poulimenos) are setting up the Association for the Protection and Promotion of Vidos, the Councillor responsible for Vidos, Spyros Neratzis, is sending his own ΄angels΄ to improve the island!

A group of well-known Corfiots is in the process of setting up a 'Friands of Vidos' association. The decision to set up an association for the protection and promotion of Vidos Island had been agreed upon a while ago but was delayed by the pandemic and lockdown.

The former Corfu Deputy Mayor Giorgos Raidestinos brought it back into the public eye in a post on Facebook:

"Because we can see that Corfiots are 'losing' Vidos Island,
Because we don't want it to become a private island,

Because we respect and support our local history,
Because this is the third year in which there will not be summer camps,
Because the Municipal shuttle boat is still in the boatyard,

Because 'nothing happens by chance',
Because we want Vidos open to all without face control....we are completing the procedure to set up of the Association for the Protection and Promotion of Vidos.

Now that the courts have reopened we are collecting the final signatures.
The next announcements and actions will take place on Vidos...which belongs to ALL OF US"

One of the photos on Giorgos Raidestinos' post shows the names of the founding members who make up the temporary board: Y. Kourkoulos (President), S. Poulimenos (Vice-President), G. Raidestinos (General Secretary), T. Spingou (Treasurer), S. Michalef, P. Metallinos and T. Hondroyiannis (Members). The temporary board is in charge of drawing up the constitution and getting court approval after which the official board will be elected.

Spyros Neratzis' 'Angels'!

Meanwhile, there is also a lot of activity from the Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipal Councillor responsible for Vidos Island Spyros Neratzis, who seems to have taken personal responsibility for the the small island.

His personal goals for the island, which the leader of the 'Kerkyra Psilla' party  has talked about on a number of occasions, have not yet been achieved and he is therefore working hard to get things done before the summer.

The news is that a team of volunteers has been created (or Vidos 'hosts and hostesses' as he likes to call them) called 'Vidos Angels'!

At the moment the team is made up of 10 women and 2 men from the Voluntary Work Department and the photo below was taken when the 'Angels' visited Vidos and Spyros Neratzis updated them and told them about the duties they will be taking on.

These duties include welcoming visitors to the island, cleaning, fire and health safety. This will be done properly and the volunteers will attend special seminars from the Fire Department and the Ambulance Service.

As regards the shuttle service to and from the island, Spyros Neratzis said that all the Municipal boats will be available from July along with two rubber dinghies which have been donated for the use of the Municipality until September. In conclusion, from today one boat is providing a shuttle service.
