First Ionian Islands food bank in Corfu

CORFU. After four years the first food distribution bank in the Ionian Islands opened its doors to large numbers of people.

Yesterday, Wednesday 19 February, the first food and esential items distribution bank opened for those eligible under the Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived (FEAD) programme in Corfu and Paxos.

According to the Ionian Islands Regional Administration press release, there was a large turnout with people coming from early in the morning to receive food, household goods and personal health items.

Distribution started at 10:00 at the 5km point of Eth. Pelekas Rd. (opposite the pharmacy store) there was exemplary service from the Ionian Islands Regional employees. 



Deputy Regional Governor for Social Welfare, Public Health & Employment Kostas Zorbas has overall supervision of the programme and was at the facility to oversee the operation and organisation of procedures.

Mr Zorbas said: "After a four-year wait the Ionian Islands Regional Administration has managed to overcome any difficulties and we have now been able to open the first food and essential items bank.

This is a great community effort to help those in difficulty. Banks will open shortly in other parts of the Region and will work on a bi-monthly basis."

Distribution of food and essential items is continuing today for Corfu and Paxos between 09:00 and 14:00.
