ATHENS. The Minister of Tourism Haris Theoharis today approved the setting up of a working group to create a plan for a National Sustainable Tourism Monitoring Centre.
The working group will be made up of seven high-ranking managers from the Ministry along with specialists and academics and its objectives are as follows:
1. Inculcation of international experience in the development of a Sustainable Tourism Development Index system.
2. Submit a proposal for the establishment of a recording and information system based on secondary data and indices which will show the basic tourism figures and their ongoing development.
3. Recording and researching tourism and other data to analyse local, regional, national and international trends so that on a local and regional level appropriate decisions can be made in a timely way regarding the management and promotion of destination 'Greece'.
4. Drawing up a plan to identify areas which fulfil the criteria for the establishment of a Monitoring Centre according to the World Tourism Organisation methodology for Sustainable Tourism Monitoring Centres.
5. Formulating indicative proposals and recommendations for a way to create an information system for sustainable tourism development and the transformation of the country's tourist destinations.
If all goes as planned, the working group will have completed its work on the first four of the objectives by 28 February and by 13 April on the final objective.
