CORFU. "Some people are obviously not happy because the removal of the waste has come through my persistance and efforts," said Meropi Ydraiou.

Meropi Ydraiou issued a statement following the withdrawal of the South Corfu Mayor Kostas Lessis and Deputy Mayor Socrates Andriotis from the Solid Waste Management Organisation (FoDSA) meeting as a "matter of dignity". She stressed that the temporary removal of waste is the only sustainable solution and reiterated categorically that there will be no increase in local taxes.

The Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Mayor and FoDSA President Meropi Ydraiou issued the following statement:

"The removal of waste from the island is the only sustainable and alternative solution so that Corfu doesn't have to live through the nightmare of rubbish on the roads again.

It affects all of us - the four Municipalities and all the people in Corfu, the Diapontia Islands and Paxos without exception. Some people are obviously not happy because the removal of the waste has come through my persistance and efforts.

Fortunately, the majority of FoDSA members understand the problem and want to act in the interest of all the Municipalities and their residents. It's just too much, however, for them to try and make Corfu live through the nightmare with the rubbish again and refuse to accept the solution of removal of waste from the island.

Without the waste management facility being ready yet and without the proper implementation of a recycling programme and sorting at source there are two choices - to proceed with the removal of the waste from the island or to see the rubbish piling up on the roads.

They won't succeed - it's time for Corfu to breathe again. We're going ahead with the transportation of the waste. We're not going to play with the public's health.

As Mayor of Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands I can assure citizens categorically that there will be no increase in local taxes. The cost of the transportation will be covered by the existing taxes.

I would laso like to let the public know that the documentation for tenders for the construction of the new facility is ready and has been sent for a final inspection. The invitation for tenders will probably go out in the middle of January.

We are moving quickly and Corfu is moving forward. We won't be held back by those who want to stay in the past."
