ATHENS. The Hellenic Police is acquiring special software and a team from the National Intelligence Service (EYP) is in the UK to be trained in its use.

The Hellenic Police (ELAS) and EYP are acquiring software which will allow them to directly access Viber, WhatsApp and dozens of other communication apps.

According to the newspaper 'Vima', a team from the National Intelligence Service (EYP) went to the UK to learn about the surveillance system and the Police Intelligence Division and Counter-Terrorist Service have also shown an interest.

The USA, UK, France and other countries have similar systems.

The acquisition of the surveillance system is a priority for ELAS and is expected to help break up criminal organisations, 70 - 80% of which use these type of apps for their communication.

However, it will also affect the means of communication of hundreds of thousands of members of the public who believed surveillance of conversations on Viber was not possible and use these platforms for confidential communication and transfer of files and other data.

According to the article, the acquisition of other special cutting edge technologies is also being looked into, such as Pegasus, which is used by counter intelligence services in other countries. Basically, this follows the movements of the phone owner through the apps that he/she uses.

With three mobile phone surveillance systems ELAS and EYP were able in 2018 to remove telephone confidentiality for 14,513 cases, 11,113 of which were done with fast-track procedure by the Prosecutor's Office, citing national security needs.
