CORFU. Despite the disgreements and loud voices, the Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipal Council voted to proceed with the animal - the deadline for funding from the ΄Philodimos΄ Programme is December 31.
Despite the fact that all the parties are in favour of the establishment of an animal shelter, there were strong disagreements about the premises that have been proposed to house it.
Yiannis Trepeklis and Giorgos Kaloudis that the proposed property - a mansion in Lakones donated by General Loukanaris - is not suitable. In her presentation of the proposal, Deputy Mayor Chrysoula Tombrou didn't mention the property but according to Messrs Trepekli and Kaloudis that is where the shelter is proposed to be housed.
The President of Lakones community said that he agreed with the Local Authority's proposal but that the state of the Loukanaris mansion is a disgrace for Lakones although not providing a shelter for stray animals is also uncivilised.
In an effort to calm things down, the head of the 'Prota i Kerkyra' party Giorgos Karydis suggested that as there was general agreement on the creation of an animal shelter, the proposal should be put forward at the next Council meeting. This was not accepted because of time limitations - the deadline for funding from the Government 'Philodimos' Programme is December 31.
Ahead of the vote Giorgos Kaloudis submitted an alternative proposal - for the establishment of an animal shelter but not in the Lakones property. This was also rejected
Finally, the Council voted in favour of the setting up of a shelter for stray animals.
