Yesterday was the 74th anniversary of the explosion of the first atomic bomb in Hiroshima - one of the darkest points in human history.

The Municipality of Corfu, as a member of 'Mayors for Peace', added its signature to the Peace Declaration for a world without nuclear weapons which was published yesterday.

In the Declaration the Mayors express their sorrow for the victims of the atomic bomb and urge world leaders to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki to to face what actually happened in the lives of individual victims and their loved ones and to listen to what survivors have to say. They pledge to make every effort to achieve the total elimination of nuclear weapons and beyond that, a world of genuine, lasting peace.

The Municipality of Corfu became an official member of the Network in February 2019. Members have pledged to make every effort to support international solidarity, going beyond borders and idealogical differences until the final goal is achieved - the complete elimination of nuclear weapons and to prevent a repeat of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki tragedies.

The Network comprises 7,785 cities from 163 countries and the Mayor of Hisoshima Kazumi Matsui is President.
