Gikas, Avlonitis and Biagis - the 3 new Corfu MPs

CORFU. Stefanos Gikas, ND, Alekos Avlonitis, SYRIZA - Progressive Alliance and Dimitris Biagis, KINAL are the new Corfu representatives in the Greek Parliament.

The only one of the three who has parliamentary experience is Stefanos Gikas from Nea Dimokratia. The other two - Alekos Avlonitis from SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance and Dimitris Biagis from KINAL - were new candidates.

NEA DIMOKRATIA (ND)
Stefanos Gikas

Commodore in the Hellenic Navy. Stefanos Gikas was born in Corfu in 1960, son of General Sotiris Gikas, former ND MP who was elected for four terms by Corfu voters 1981-1993.

He graduated from the Zosimaia School in Ioannina in 1977 and joined the Naval Cadets School and studied mathematics at Crete University. He graduated with 'Excellent' and chose a career as officer in the Hellenic Navy.

He gained a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Monterey University as well as Postgraduate Degrees in Strategical & Defence Studies and Naval Science & Strategy. He served on the 'Limnos' frigate 1991-92 and took part in an important mission to the Persian Gulf.

He was Communications Manager and worked closely with two Defence Ministers in the Kostas Karamanlis government - Spilios Spiliotopoulos and Evaggelos Meimarakis - and was Press Spokesman and Communications Director for the Armed Forces 2004-07.

In the 2007 elections he was ND candidate for Corfu. He got 8,000 votes but didn't win the seat. He was Press Spokesman for the party in Corfu during the European Elections of 2009 and in October 2009 he became the No.1 MP in Corfu.

In January 2011 he was appointed Deputy Shadow Minister for Defence for ND - a position he kept for four years.

In the May 2012 elections he was once again a candidate for ND in Corfu but came second with a difference of 43 votes. In January 2015 he was elected ND MP for Corfu with 60% of his party's votes.

Stefanos Gikas has two daughters aged 18 and 22.

SYRIZA - Progressive Alliance
Alexandros Avlonitis

Alekos Avlonitis was born in Dafni, Corfu in 1956. He studied Law at Thrace Dimokritio University and has worked as a lawyer in Corfu since 1983.

At University he was Secretary of Thrace Law School Students' Union. He was member of the Board of Corfu Lawyers' Association for nine years. From 1995 to 2002 he was member of the Regional Council for NE Corfu.

President of the Integrated Vocational Centre for NE Corfu 1995 - 2002.

Member of the Ionian Islands Regional Council 2003- 2007. From January 2007 to 2010 he was Mayor of the Esperia Municipality in Corfu. From 2010 to 2014 he was leader of the main opposition party in Corfu Municipality and mayoral candidate.

KINAL
Dimitris Biagis

He graduated from the Law School at the National Capodistrian University in Athens and is a lawyer and member of Corfu Lawyers' Association. He served two terms from 2002 to 2010 as a councillor in the Municipality of Thinalia, Corfu. In 2014 he was a candidate for Deputy Regional Governor with the 'Megalo Ionio' party and became a Regional Councillor.

In 2016 he became Secretary of the Ionian Islands Regional Council following a unanimous vote.

As a student he took an active part in student issues as member of PASP and PASOK Youth. In 2013 he was elected to PASOK Corfu Regional Committee and later became Secretary / Coordinator.
