CORFU. The birth of St. John the Baptist is celebrated throughout Greece and in many places in Corfu on the eve of 24 June.
The roots of the celebration have been lost in the mists of time and traditionally locals light three small bonfires in a row which they have to jump over three times.
It is believed that people are cleansed by the power of the fire now that the days are beginning to draw in again - evil is purged and there is hope of a new beginning.
'Lampata' with fires, dancing and singing is celebrated in a lot of Corfu villages as well as in the town itself.
The photos show the fires in the Upper Square that were lit by the Regional Scout Group.
