Varoufakis: The hydrocarbons should remain in the depths of the sea

CORFU. Yanis Varoufakis oulined the seven parts of the MeRA25 manifesto on his short visit to Corfu.
He visited Corfu as part of his election campaign. The seven parts of his party's manifesto are restructuring the national debt with development clauses, drastic reduction of surpluses, tax rates (reduction of VAT, abolishment of prepaid tax deposits), creation of a public payment system outwith the banks, loans in the red, salaried employment and entrepreneurship and public assets.
He also presented his party's candidates Nikos Ventouras, Spyros Savanis, Maria Bitsaki and Litsa Alexaki and highlighting the reasons why MeRA25 should enter Parliament he said, "We are the only voice that is saying 'No' to debt slavery, we are the only party with responsible, moderate and realistic proposals for the country. There must be an end to irresponsible obedience and 'Yes to everything'. The public are starting to be persuaded that there is no other way except with memoranda but we want to show them that there is." He reckons that the available vote-bank is with those who voted No at the 2015 Referendum and asked voters to support the "single-minded, resolute resistance" to the "revanchist oligarchy" of the Nea Dimokratia (ND) party. "The only way for Kyriakos Mitsotakis to gain a majority is to vote for us," he said.
When asked about the hydrocarbon drilling, which is of such great concern for local communities, he said categorically, "The hydrocarbons should stay in the depths of the sea - drilling will have a devastating effect. The time has come for the Corfu residents to protest. Wherever there is oil the local communities are being destroyed. The only ones who will become rich are the three oligarchs whilst there will be no benefit to the community. There is not even any economic benefit - renewable energy sources are much cheaper!"
Yanis Varoufakis said that MeRA25 is the only green and anti-memoranda party which can propose legislation right from the first day after the elections.
Finally, he expressed his gratitude once again to the Corfu voters who put their trust in him at the European elections and returned the highest percentage nationwide.
