ATHENS. Absolutely vital for a solution to the waste management problem.

The immediate and scientifically planned implementation of the principles of circular economy with sorting at source and 50% reduction of residues is absolutely vital for a solution to the waste management problem

This was the unanimous verdict of the scientists, politicians from all parties, and national and local government representatives at the meeting "Policy Proposals for Greece 2020: Circular Economy".

The meeting took place on Thursday 13 June at the 1st European 'Environmental Education & Recycling Park' in Athens.

Spyros Neratzis, head of the Corfu 'Kerkyra Psila' party, said, "We presented the example of Corfu and the significant progress there has been with Recycling Centres, large producers of waste (hotels etc.) and the initiative of sorting at source from residents without any organisational or structural support from the local authorities - who are legally obliged to provide it.

It was confirmed that the procedure is part of the national plan, is law and it just remains for the municipalities to implement the legislation.

An indication of the necessity for the agreed plan to be implemented was the agreement between them of the political representatives present at the meeting - Messrs Tsironis (SYRIZA Minister), Aravosis (ND) and Papandreou (KINAL) - even though there is a General Election coming up."

Those present at the meeting exchanged scientific ideas and experiences and expressed their concern at the situation. As well as representatives from the political parties there were also representatives from the academic and business communities at the meeting. Maria Loizidou, Georgios Kremlis, Adamantios Skordilis from Corfu, Stefanos Komninos and Georgios Kaloudis.

Spyros Neratzis said, "We don't have the luxury of being able to start implementing the plan from September 1st when the new Town Council takes over. We are already way too late."
