ATHENS. They spent a full two days discussing the road map for a solution to the refuse problem.

Meropi Ydraiou and Kostas Nikolouzos had two days of meetings in Athens to discuss the road map for a solution to the refuse problem. They met first of all with the person responsible for the study and following that with Pitsiotlas, Famelos, the administration and the commissioner examining all the aspects of what they hope will be a solution. According to the new Mayor, representatives of the national government and others involved said once again that "funds exist". What is needed now is for matters to be properly organised and a capable work group to supervise the construction of the Integrated Waste Management facility using the available funds as soon as possible.

The time required will not be less than 2 - 2½ years, which means that at least half of the term of the incoming municipal authority will be spent managing this interim period.

The good news is that, as long as action is taken within the given timescale and as long as the economy and the environment can stand it, the study will be completed soon and invitations for tender issued for the construction of a new residual landfill for the residue from the waste managemnt process.

Six areas of collaboration

Meropi Ydraiou places great importance on collaboration with all the municipal parties as well as with the other two new municipalities. For this reason she is holding meetings with party leaders today (Thursday) and with the other two Mayors (Mahimaras and Lessis) on Friday. According to sources, waste management will not be the only topic of these meetings - Ms Ydraiou is preparing to present six topics.

It seems, however, that at today's meeting, at least, most parties are sending representatives and not the leaders! Mr. Trepeklis is sending Ms Dagli and Mr. Sarlis is sending Mr. Boukas. Georgios Karydis told Ms Ydraiou that he will respond once the Court has published the final and official results. Spyros Neratzis is in Athens and is sending Mr. Varouhas in his place.
