CORFU. Good Friday is the day of the Epitaphios - processions begin in the afternoon and continue until midnight.
Each church conducts its own Epitaphios procession - through the alleys and the town suburbs. The processions follow a programme with each one taking place at a specific time with the participation of musical groups, choirs, schools, scouts and others.
A lot of locals and visitors make sure they have a table in Spianada from early in the morning in order to enjoy the unique experience at close hand - many taking 'shifts' to hold on to the tables. Everyone wants to be as close as possible to witness the three main Philharmonic Bands playing the funeral marches - especially Albinoni's Adagio from the 'Old' Philharmonic Band.
The last and largest Epitaphios is that of the Metropolitan Church, which starts at 22:00 and is watched by thousands.
