CORFU. The icon exhibition "Beatitudes" by Maria Sideri opens at the Attic Gallery on Saturday 13 April at 20:00.
The exhibition “Beatitudes” is Maria Sideri’s first exhibition in Corfu, and comprises a broad range of her work from the last few years. Among them is the title piece that she will speak more extensively about in a presentation during the exhibition.
Greek iconography is one of very few sacred artistic traditions with clear roots that can be historically traced to antiquity, showing constant evolution up to our time. Although it has been thought to be a static, unchanging tradition, this is not true, since although it does follow a specific church canon specifying certain rules for representation and symbolism, the iconographer is entirely free to develop their own aesthetic and composition, guided by the aim of inspiring the faithful.
Maria Sideri is one of the very few active, modern icon painters who has studied the symbolism, tradition, and artistic options in depth, and has managed to stay true to the church canon, while breathing a truly new and refreshing element into her icons. She uses traditional materials and techniques, but her pallette is vibrant. Her compositions are particularly resourceful, unfurling scriptural narratives through imagery that is approachable and attractive to the modern eye. The faces of her saints and angels balance realism with stylization that clearly reflect the allegories and metaphysical allusions they contain. Thus her work comprises a true form of modern iconography that with both respect and boldness, is actually evolving this ancient tradition in the 21st century.
The Attic Gallery, 1, Rizospaston Voulefton St (former French Institute), side entrance, 2nd floor.
