ATHENS. There was almost ΄civil war΄ from the Corfiots at the SYRIZA Central Committee meeting on the splitting up of the Municipality.

In the end the meeting ended in favour of the creation of three municipalities with the strong speech from the Party Secretary who was both adamant and able to ensure there were no problems.

Panos Skourletis made clear that the restructuring of the municipalities, especially on the large islands, was party policy which had been talked about by the Prime Minister at the regional conference in Corfu as well as at other times and was confirmed by the Regional and Municipal Councils.

Prior to Mr. Skourleti, the party parliamentary representative Fotini Vaki from Corfu spoke of the recent statements from the Chamber of Commerce and other local organizations which opposed mainly the hurried nature of the division. However, Mr. Skourletis' speech was the reason that the other Corfu MP Kostas Pavlidis didn't speak, even though he had been listed to do so.

According to Parliament sources, the amendment calling for the splitting of the island municipalities (Corfu, Cephalonia, Lesvos and Samos) and Velventos Kozani will be presented to Parliament on Monday or Tuesday at the latest and may even be voted on the same day.
