CORFU. The responders are fully trained and can give first aid without any time being wasted until they reach the hospital.

Corfu EKAB (Hellenic Ambulance Service) will have two motorcycle responders during the summer period following the decision of the Director of the 7th EKAB Region Vassilis Papadiotis, who was in Corfu last week.

The addition of these responders to the ambulance fleet is of prime importance as they are fully trained to provide immediate treatment where it is needed without losing any valuable time before they can be taken to hospital.

The first steps have already been taken to provide a base for them. This will be located in a property belonging to the hospital next to Corfu 'New Horizons' Social Cooperative (KOISPE) and the Psychiatric Day Centre which will be prepared for use by the Corfu Chamber of Commerce. Chamber Board member Stratos Tagatidis told Enimerosi that the Board decided to take on the expenses of preparing the premises with painting, plumbing and air-conditioning. The Deputy Regional Governor for Social Welfare Alekos Michalas and Regional Councillor Tasos Salvanos will be ensuring that the premises are equipped with the furniture which had been donated by the former Chandris Hotel and catering for the personnel will be supplied by the hospital and businesses that work with them.

The first motorcycles will be available in April to cover the Easter period and then from 20 or 25 June until the end of August for the summer period.

With the aid of funds provided by Corfu Medical Association maintenance work was carried out on the existing EKAB ambulances along with the new one from the Municipality which had been donated by the Municipality of Parma and the Italian Aqui Division.

This is the good news with regard to the Corfu Ambulance Service and its readiness for the increased demand of the summer period. However, there is still a lack of personnel as has been repeatedly stressed by the workers and has also, unfortunately, been seen in fact. The President of the Corfu EKAB workers' union Spyros Poulis reminded Enimerosi that EKAB had recently withdrawn a worker who had been sent to reinforce Corfu personnel.

Nothing has been done yet regarding the demand that two divisions be set up - North and South - to cover the needs of the two extremes of the island. There are hopes, however, that at least in the summer a branch will be set up in the South.
