AIGIO. The Archbishop of Kalavrita and Aigialeia was found guilty of incitement to discriminatory violence or hatred and abuse of ecclesiastical office.

Aigio Court found Ambrosios, Archbishop of Kalavrita and Aigialeia guilty on both counts. The Archbishop faced charges of incitement to discriminatory violence or hatred and abuse of ecclesiastical office for the inflammatory and homophobic post on his website in December 2015 titled "The Scum of Society are Rearing their Heads!"

The court prosecutor had recommended that he be found innocent because despite his "sharp" words, he isn't in a powerful enough position to incite individuals or groups to take extreme actions against others. The Archbishop appeared unrepentant when he spoke. "I don't care if my written words could have caused intolerant actions against homosexuals," he said. "Homosexuals can do whatever they want, but not to provoke us. Provocation will cause us to harden our attitude... The phrase 'Spit on them' is the most lenient Christian expression."

For his posts condemning homosexuality the court sentenced the Archbishop to a total of 7 months imprisonment suspended for three years, taking into account the mitigating factor that he was a first-time offender.
