CORFU. 27m Euros for the construction of a new road that will bypass the Tria Gefyria-Vrioni section.

The Ionian Islands Regional Council gave the go-ahead for the construction of a road to bypass the road between Tria Gefyria and Vrioni at its meeting on Saturday 19th.

The Regional Governor Theodoros Galiatsatos presented the proposal for the project 'Construction of Road Between Tria Gefyria and Vrioni' with a budget of 27,418,876 Euros and it was approved unanimously.

The new road artery will bypass the existing Corfu-Girou-Achilleio road from the Tria Gefyria crossroads to Vrioni.

This is a significant project which help relieve the traffic congestion on the Eth. Lefkimmis Rd in the section between Tria Gefyria and Vrioni and will also improve the Regional road between North and South.

The new artery will belong to the 'All' road OMOE category (connecting roads that pass through non-residential areas and with limited access to the parallel residential areas) with a speed limit of 70kph.

The road will be an improvement of the existing Eth. Lefkimmis Rd and due to the existing buildings the new section will be 15m in width with two lanes in each direction as well as pavements 1.2m in width.

The road from the Kanalia junction to the Vrioni junction will be 17m wide with two lanes in each direction separated by Jersey barriers and flanking lanes 0.5m wide.

To allow access to the local roads in the section after the Kanalia junction there will be two underpasses.

The project includes earthwork, technical work, road surfacing, signage, safety, traffic lights at the junctions and street lighting.
