CORFU. The Salon is a relaxed gathering in which to discuss and explore a wide range of cultural issues and questions. The Hostess or guest speaker begins with a short talk to set the theme for that evening, which may include illustrations or a pop-up exhibit.
The Hostess, and any guest speakers, develop the dialogue, and then open the discussion to the floor.
Cultural Salons originated in early Enlightenment France and were an important social institution where a hostess would gather artists and scholars for intellectual discussion and socialising. It was an opportunity for philosophical debate, the creative exchange of ideas, and led to many significant cultural and social developments in Europe.
In the Attic Gallery, the French Salons are one of our greatest inspirations, and so this project aims to hold monthly open meetings to which all are welcome. The Attic Hostess, Dr Sasha Chaitow, will front the first few Salons to lead the discussion, and will be joined by visiting artists and invited speakers in coming months.
The first Salon will be held on Wednesday 9 January 20:00 - 21:30
