Blessing of the Waters at the Old Port - The cross was lost in the murky waters!

The Archbishop of Corfu, Paxos and the Diapontia Islands had to throw a second cross into the water - this time attached to a rope. The original cross, which had been carried away by the current, was eventually found by a diver at a depth of about 10 metres.



The traditional Blessing of the Waters was conducted in a celebratory atmosphere, despite the 'hitch', and was attended by a large crowd who had a panoramic view of the proceedings from Mourayia. The weather for the ceremony was sunnier and the cold rather milder than it had been over the previous two days.

Following the service at the Metropolitan Church there was a short procession to the Old Port for the Blessing of the Waters with clergy, members of the local authority, politicians and members of the armed forces, Philharmonic Bands and a large number of believers.
