CORFU. "What the heathen conquerors couldn΄t manage, the powers that be are vehemently trying to impose on us - demanding that the Church remain silent."

Archbishop Nektarios talked about the Tsipras - Hieronymous agreement at the Church Assembly at Corfu Metropolitan Church on Monday evening. The guest speaker at the event was Archbishop Joel of Edessa, Pella and Almopia.

In his opening address the Corfu Archbishop welcomed  Archbishop Joel and then went on to talk about the latest developments in the country regarding the revision of the Constitution and Church salaries: "Unfortunately, our Church is being attacked not only from abroad but mainly from within our own country.

Attempts are even being made to remove any reference to the Orthodox faith, as if the faith has ever done any harm to Greece. On the contrary, the Orthodox faith and the blood of martyrs has kept our race alive throughout the centuries. What the heathen conquerors couldn't manage, the powers that be are vehemently trying to impose on us - demanding that the Church remain silent. There is no chance of this happening. The Bishops, in particular, have a duty to defend the truth at all costs from whoever may be attacking it.

Our priority is the salvation of humanity and to safeguard our fathers' beliefs. There is no room for compromise, let alone diplomatic agreements, when it comes to matters of salvation."
