ZAKYNTHOS. The rock fall happened at just after 11:00 at the cliffs by the famous Navagio Beach and overturned boats - leading to tourists being injured when they fell into the sea and hit other boats.
Initially there were fears that some people were missing but, fortunately, these were proved to be unfounded when Coast Guard divers searched the area. According to Imera Zakynthou, one foreign woman who was in a small boat at the Navagio Beach with her husband and children was hit by a wave caused by the rock fall. This threw her overboard and she hit another nearby boat. She was rescued by the captain of the other boat, taken to a nearby harbour - Porto Vromi - and then transferred to the hospital.
Another injured woman had her arm put in plaster. A Czech family - a couple with their two children - and another tourist are amongst those injured.
A team from the Special Crisis Response Unit (EMAK) from the Fire Service in Elefsina came to Zakynthos in a Super Puma. Another 10 personnel from Patras EMAK with a trained dog went overland to Kilini and from there to the island to help the local Fire Service and Coast Guard search for anyone who may be missing.
