CORFU. Despite their confrontational relationship the residents of South Corfu and the police managed to find common ground regarding the negligent handling of the situation by the local authorities.
The two sides had a lengthy discussion yesterday about their differences and in the end they found what they had in common. The Police Federation leadership listened to what the Lefkimmi representatives President Spyros Pandis and Treasurer Eleni Monastirioti had to say at a meeting which was also attended by representatives from the Chamber of Commerce Giorgos Hondroyiannis and Vassilis Vassilakis. The common denominator was their belief that the waste management issue shouldn't develop into a conflict between Lefkimmi and the police but that it is the resoponsibility of the local authorities to take measures to resolve the situation and allow the police to leave.
The President of the National Federation of Police Employees (POASY) Grigoris Gerakarakos and the President of the National Federation of Police Officers (POAXIA) Ioannis Katsiamakas both stressed that the conditions under which their colleagues are working are dangerous for their health and safety.
Also present at the meeting were the President of the Corfu Police Officers' Union Manthos Yiannoulis and the President of the Corfu Police Employees' Union Nikos Bozikis.
At the end of the meeting the President of Lefkimmi Cultural Society Spyros Pandis said that they had found "common ground".
