Plans for an International Ionian Islands Council

CORFU. Regional Governor Theodoros Galiatsatos presented the unanimously-agreed conclusions from the 1st International Conference for Ionian Islands Expatriates.

"The 1st International Conference for Ionian Islands Expatriates decided the following:

1. Action to be taken by all to ensure that Greek citizens living abroad have the vote as required by the constitution.

2. Coordination between the Regional Administration, Chambers of Commerce and State Authorities to establish the promotion of local products in the international market, especially in areas where there are expatriates.

3. Creation of an annual programme by the Regional Administration for cultural exchange activities such as film productions, music and dance groups.

4. The establishment of Summer Schools at the Ionian University for expatriate students and pupils focussing on the Greek language, history and culture.

5. The creation of an Ionian Islands Institute at the Ionian University for study and research into the Ionian Islands diaspora and other subjects in conjunction with expatriate organizations.

6. The need for special efforts to promote the Greek language and maintain the Ionian Islands vernacular. Collaboration with the government so that measures are taken to reinforce teaching in schools abroad.

7. The Regional Administration will set up a communications platform where expatriates, especially the young, will be able to post information, videos etc about the islands. This platform will be supervised by the Regional Administration Expatriates Department.

8. The establishment of a Council for expatriate organizations which will create a database with all the Ionian Islands organizations. The catalogue will be given to the Regional Administration and published in the media so as to ensure that the data is updated and noone is excluded.

9. Assistance and technical support from the Regional Administration and the Municipalities for expatriate organizations in social finance programmes and the creation of active communities which generate a satisfactory income.

10. The setting-up of a temporary committee to oversee the establishment of the International Ionian Islands Council. The committee will be made up of the following:

Vassilis Matarangas - President of the Hellenic-American National Council (USA), Konstantinos Vangelatos - General Secretary of 'Odysseus' International Cephalonia & Ithaca Federation (USA), Angelos Rouhota - member of 'Kefalos' New York Association (USA), Sotiris Antipas - President of 'Ainos' Cephalonia Association (Montreal, Canada), Nikos Spathis - member of 'Ainos' Cephalonia Association (Montreal, Canada), Archbishop Ioannis of Zambia & Malawi (Africa), Gerasimos Klonis - President of the Australian Society of Greek Writers, Giorgos Mihalatos - President of 'Okis' Federation of Cephalonia & Ithaca Associations and Ioannis Parginos - President of Ionian Islands Confederation and Federation of Attica Corfu Associations (Athens).

Finally, the conference expresses its hope for the development of coordinated actions from all the expatriate organizations abroad and in the rest of Greece with the common aim of strengthening ties with and supporting the homeland."
