CORFU. At least 40 food and beverage establishments will have their operations suspended from Sunday following inspections that have been conducted over the last five days in the Ionian Islands.
These businesses are both in town and around the rest of the island and were found to have committed tax violations - the minimum for charges to be brought is 10 products/services without receipts or one product/service valued at at least 1,000 Euros without a receipt.
The initial penalty is suspension of operations for 48 hours, if it is a first offence there is a 4-day suspension and if it is a second, 10 days.
Business sources told Enimerosi that there have been inspections by several teams simultaneously at several locations on the island. These joint teams comprise representatives from the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE), the Labour Inspectorate, the National Social Security Institution (EFKA) and Customs to check if illegally imported goods are being sold.
According to legal circles that deal with these cases, the penalty for tax violations is suspension of operations whereas if there is a violation of labour laws heavy fines are imposed.
