PM Alexis Tsipras΄address: Ithaca is just the beginning

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras arrived in Ithaca by helicopter just after 10:00 this morning. The highly symbolic location of Ithaca was chosen for his address at the end of the seemingly never-ending financial bailout and at the turning of the page in the Greek economy.

His visit to the island wasn't confirmed until late on Monday night and the Mayor of Ithaca Dionysis Stanitsas wasn't informed until Tuesday morning.





During his meeting with the Mayor, the Prime Minister pointed out, "Ithaca is both a historical place and a paradise. I haven't been here for a long time - I came here as a student on a motorbike and with a tent. I'm really glad that images from here today will be seen all over the world. It means an end to a modern Odyssey and we should remember that this arrival in Ithaca isn't the end of the adventure. I believe that your island will become viral throughout the world."

There were also protests during the Prime Minister's visit, like this banner that some residents hung up.
