Another rubbish pile fire in Acharavi early this morning

17 Aug 2018 / 07:56

CORFU. Yet another dangerous incident with fire breaking out in a pile of rubbish.

This time the Fire Service was called out to the road between Acharavi and Agios Martinos in North Corfu, where a fire had broken out just after midnight on Thursday. Thanks to the immediate response of the firefighters the fire was brought under control before it could spread to neighbouring areas with vegetation.

These types of fires have been rife since April and have been breaking out in various open areas on the island. In the north and the south, where refuse collection has been very irregular, small 'rubbish dumps' build up on the roadside which become breeding grounds for disease as well as danger spots for drivers when the rubbish spills onto the road.

The fires usually break out in the middle of the night creating additional dangers to health with the dioxins that are released into the atmosphere when the rubbish burns.
