LEFKIMMI. Before the scheduled inspection of the bales being sent to Lefkimmi landfill by the Environmental Services, which had been announced by the Regional Governor on Thursday, a waste bale fell into the hands of Lefkimmi residents by chance.

One waste bale got separated from the others when it fell onto the road near Marathia which, apart from anything else, illustrates inadequate care being taken in the transportation to the furthest part of the island - damage could have been done to other vehicles or it could even have caused an accident.

The Lefkimmi residents who recovered the bale naturally opened it up - with photos and videos that immediately got shared on social media.

According to the residents that opened up the bale, it contained mixed waste and not residue - which was perhaps to be expected given the extremely low percentage of recyclable materials and composting that exists.

An extraordinary Leffkimmi Cultural Society meeting was then called.

The question now is what will happen when the Environmental Services inspect bale samples in the next few days to see if the strict environmental regulations - which were a precondition for the temporary licence issued on 6 June - are being adhered to.
