RIO. Katerina Goutzouki wins in Greek Children΄s Chess Championship in Rio.
Yet again there was a first place for Corfu as well as other good performances at the Greek Children's Chess Championship in Rio (in Greece not Brazil!) which finished on Monday.
The Championships took place in the large conference hall of the Porto Rio Hotel with the top young chess players from throughout Greece taking part - 11 of them from Corfu. There were nine matches, each lasting 3 - 4 hours, with all the moves being recorded. After eight days of hard and exciting matches the players from Corfu had excellent results.
Playing high-level chess and scoring 8.5 out of 9, Katerina Goutzouki became Greek Under-10 Champion. She won her first 7 matches, thus making sure of the title with two matches still to play!
Katerina will represent Greece at the European Championships in Riga, Latvia (birthplace of the legendary world champion Mikhail Tal) in August, where we are certain that she will do well.
