Decentralized Administration amends Lefkimmi environmental regulations

CORFU. The Cleansing Services had just requested the amendment to the regulations when the Decentralized Administration sent it early on Friday evening - thus allowing the use of the sports pitch in Mesorahi, Lefkimmi for temporary storage of the waste bales.
The Cleansing Services sent their request on Thursday and the answer came to the Regional Administration early on Friday evening. The President of the Regional Council then ordered the statement to be publicized so that all interested parties could see the exact content of the amendment and the time limit of this temporary measure.
This amendment allows the Cleansing Services to go ahead and use the Lefkimmi facility without the damage done by the recent arson attack needing to be repaired first. In other words, the waste bales from Temploni can be taken there in order to free up the space at Temploni.
There of course remains the political handling of the situation, given that Lefkimmi residents are opposed to the use of the facility.

It has been estimated that 10,000 tons of refuse are piled up around the baling facility in Temploni and that over 3,000 tons are piled up throughout the island!
