President of Parliament opens the Ioannis Kapodistrias exhibition

CORFU. The crowning moment of the celebratory events for the 154th anniversary of the Union of the Ionian Islands with Greece.
The opening of he exhibition of the life and work of the great Greek politician and diplomat in the Permanent Exhibition section of the Municipal Art Gallery was the crowning moment of the 21st May celebrations, The opening ceremony was conducted by the President (Speaker) of Parliament, Nikos Voutsis, and the Government was represented by the Minister of Justice, Stavros Kontonis.
The exhibition follows the narrative of the exhibition in the Greek Parliament - 'Ioannis Kapodistrias: His progress over time' - which opened in November 2016 and is part of the programme organized by the Municipality of Corfu during its 2-year presidency of the Kapodistrias Network.
There will be digital reproductions of documents, publications, newspapers, heirlooms and works of art which have been given by various organizations such as the Greek Parliament Library, the Russian Foreign Ministry, the State Archives, the National History Museum and the Benaki Museum.
The exhibition has been enriched with items from a variety of sources - from local and other communities as well as from individuals who gladly responded to the Municipality's request for material for the exhibition.
There are original works of art and other items which were donated by the State Archives, Corfu Central Public Library, Corfu Reading Society, Corfu Studies Society, the Metropolitan Church of Corfu, axos and the Diapontian Islands, Kapodistrias Museum. Corfu Philharmonic Society, AlphaBank Cultural Foundation, S. Gaoutsis, S. Andreadis and the Koskoros family.
The exhibition runs until Sunday 30th December and aims to give the public the opportunity to learn more about the charismatic Ioannis Capodistrias and to show the influence of his work on modern-day society.
