The Art of Uzbekistan Carpets and Textiles at the Museum of Asian Art

CORFU. Bukhara, the lucky city of Uzbekistan, has become identified with the carpet cottage industry.

The new permanent exhibition at the Museum of Asian Art ‘The Art of Central Asia’ opens on Friday 11th May at 19:00. The exhibits have been donated by Yiannis Sartzetakis and Ruth Dayton and include woven textiles, knitted textiles, clothing and jewels from 19th century Central Asia.

The event will be attended by Mr. Abdulaziz Akkulov, Deputy President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tourism Development Committee, Mr. Olim Kasimov, Uzbekistan Consul General in Athens, and Mr. Xenophon Lambrakis, President of the Eurasian Union.

At the same time, Friday 11th May at 19:00, the international conference ‘On collecting rugs in the Baluch tradition’ will also open. The conference will focus on the special textile tradition of Central Asian nomads. The conference is taking place on 12th and 13th May at the Museum of Asian Art.

The President of FedHATTA (Federation of Hellenic Associations of Tourist and Travel Agencies), Mr. Lysandros Tsilidis, met with the Uzbek Official and Mr. Lambrakis at the Federation’s offices in Athens. The Uzbek representatives informed Mr. Tsilidis that since February 2017 Greeks can obtain visas online within 2 days at the Uzbekistan Consulate in Greece without needing an invitation.

At the meeting, ways of increasing the number of visitors from Uzbekistan to Greece were also discussed. It should be mentioned that Greek Consular authorities implement the Visa Centre process to provide a speedier service for Uzbek travellers.
