CORFU. This year Corfu Municipal Art Gallery is honouring one of the greatest Corfu artists, Stefanos Sgouros, with the painting exhibition “Stefanos Sgouros – A Retrospective”.

Born in the village of Korakiana in 1924, he was inherently a noble person who loved and was proud of his Corfu heritage. He immortalized Corfu nature and architecture in a way that evoked a sense of tranquility.

Continuing the classic Corfu artists’ tradition, he worked with both water paints and oil. He worked continuously creating landscapes, still life, ethographic scenes and portraits.

A restless and creative spirit, he also wrote prose and poetry.

The exhibition opens on Wednesday 28th March and will run until Friday 18th May. It consists solely of works given by the Sgouros family, many of which are on public display for the first time. The paintings go back to his first creative years and also depict the Corfu countryside, the old town, churches and his family that he loved so much.

The exhibition has been curated by Ms. Marina Papasotiriou, curator of the Corfu branch of the National Art Gallery, whereas the historian and philologist Dimitris Zymaris collated his life and his literary work.
