15 Mar 2018 / 07:59

10 students from Corfu 1st Junior High School accompanied by three of their teachers were hosted by Italian partner-school Instituto Compresivo 2 Anagni as part of the Erasmus+ European Programme, on the subject of ‘Cathedrals’.

From 5-9 March six male and four female pupils from the 2nd and 3rd years of the 1st Junior High School, accompanied by three teachers travelled to the small town of Anagni in the Frozinone Region, about 60km from Rome. The “Instituto Compresivo” School welcomed the students and teachers from all the partner-schools in the Erasmus+ program (Spain, Portugal and Greece) and they all collaborated on their subject of study: ‘Cathedrals’.

The main topic of the project is the architecture and history of cathedrals along with the use of new technologies use for their study and promotion. However, the horizons of the pupils are being broadened through this experience and they become aware of different religious perspectives and learn to respect diversity whilst developing the concept of a multicultural and tolerant European society.

The pupils had the opportunity to work in groups with their peers at various workshops. They studied different cathedral styles (gothic, rococo etc), created a mosaic based on the oldest mosaic pattern at Anagni cathedral and created a 3D paper Italian cathedral.

Through all these activities they learned about the daily life of a typical Italian school, exchanged ideas and concerns about their schools but primarily, they had the opportunity to speak English in real situations, thus helping their linguistic and communication skills.

They were also taken on tours of important cathedrals, abbeys and famous architectural monuments: COLLOSEO, PIAZZA VENEZIA, FONTANA DI TREVI, PIAZZA DI SPAGNA, VATICANO and the MONTECASSINO and CASAMARI abbeys.

This trip, as all trips based on the exchange of experiences, provided both pupils and teachers with unique experiences related to their educational and cultural development. All these experiences broaden their mental horizons and equip them with valuable assets for the development of their Greek and European identity.
