CORFU. “Today is not just a day of celebration but a day for vigilance,” says Deputy Regional Governor Nikoletta Pandi.
“March 8th, International Women’s Day, is a day which reminds us every year of the struggles, sacrifices and achievements of women all over the world for over 160 years. Today we remember the New York female workers’ fight against double exploitation and we honour their fair demands for dignity in their lives and at work through the elimination of inequality between men and women and exploitation of women.
“Even today these demands still remain unfulfilled. Women frequently have to deal with incidents of abuse, violence and harassment. The obstacles to their opportunities for development at work are often due to their multiple social roles. The question of equal access for women to all aspects of social life even today has still to a great extent not been satisfactorily addressed.
“Today is not a day of celebration, it’s a day for vigilance!
The elimination of discrimination against women isn’t just a matter of inequality, equality before the law and justice in the world. Equality of the sexes is necessary for the establishment of peace, progress and social prosperity and for democracy. “
