Clocks go forward this month – possibly for the last time

Our clocks will have to go forward one hour on 25th March, when Summer Time begins.

Perhaps it will be the last time as its discontinuation is being discussed in the EU.

When do the clocks change this year?

In 2018 clocks go forward at 03:00 on Sunday 25th March to 04:00.

All the member states of the EU are obliged to follow this regulation – on the last Sunday in March at 01:00 GMT clocks go forward and the reverse happens on the last Sunday of October at 01:00 GMT.

However, in February the European Parliament voted in favour of the abolishment of Summer Time, based on the arguments that it is bad for health, agriculture and road safety. The motion was carried with 384 votes for, 153 against and 12 abstentions.

This means that it is now up to the European Commission to judge whether the regulation requiring clocks to go forward one hour at the beginning of Summer Time should be revoked. As yet the Commission has not taken this decision.
