Corfu Philharmonic Society: Youth Band Concert

CORFU. The Youth Band of Corfu Philharmonic Society will perform a concert entitled “The wonderful world of classical music: from the Renaissance to the 21st century” on Sunday 4th March at 19:30 at Corfu Municipal Theatre. Conductor: Spiros Prosoparis.

The Youth Band will perform its regular concert, with the theme this time being ‘A journey through the history of classical music from the Renaissance until today’. The programme will begin with Goldman’s march ‘The Bells of Freedom’, followed by the overture from Verdi’s opera ‘Nabucco’.

As always, the concert will also include 2 solo pieces performed by the winners of the Society’s annual competition last November in memory of the musicologist Spiros Montsenigos. Christos Pilos (1st prize) and Eleftheria Kakarounga (2nd prize) will perform the ‘Menuet’ from Bizet’s 2nd ‘Arlesiana ’ suite and Mozart’s ‘Rondo’ for clarinet and band respectively.

 The first part of the concert will include Dvorak’s 9th ‘New World Symphony’ Finale and ‘Mars’ from Holst’s suite ‘The Planets’. In the second part of the concert there will be pieces by Susato, Monteverdi, Bach, Boccherini and Weber along with several surprises from the Youth Band musicians on stage.

There will then be a short dedication to the music of Russia with the ‘Procession of the Sardar’ from Ippolitov-Ivanov’s ‘Caucasian Sketches’.  Following this, themes from Tschaikowsky’s ‘1812 Overture’ will be performed and the concert will conclude with the first two parts of Orff’s ‘Carmina Burana’ cantata and Spiros Prosoparis’ piece ‘Mythorama: Return to Homeric Scheria’.

There will be a prologue to the concert from Youth Band Musicians Faedra Soukera, Anastasia Tanti, Maritina Sayiadinou and Anna Kakali.
