The Ministry of Economy and Development and the Ministry for the Environment have announced funding for 10 regions.
ATHENS. Alternate Minister of Economy and Development, Alexis Charitsis, and Alternate Minister for the Environment and Energy, Socrates Famellos, announced funding for the development of Integrated Waste Management projects in 10 regions to a total of 5 million Euros.
With the signatures of the Special Secretary for the Administration of Sectoral Business Programmes for the European Regional Development Fund (ETPA) and Cohesion Fund (TS), Evgenia Fotoniata, studies for Waste Processing Units and landfills have been integrated into the ESPA (Partnership Agreement for Development Framework) 2014-2020 programme in the following regions:
The Alternate Minister of Economy and Development, Alexis Charitsis, said, “Protection of the environment along with public health and quality of life is a cornerstone of our development policy. We are implementing the new National Plan for Waste Management and financially supporting environmentally sustainable investments. In collaboration with local authorities we are focussing on the specific needs of each region and with targeted actions funding all the necessary projects to finally bring to an end the poor waste management we have had over the past years.
Since the summer we have committed ourselves to supporting not only the projects themselves but also the completion of unfinished studies in order to overcome the chronic delays there have been due to the lack of completed studies. We are now fulfilling this commitment with this agreement, which was prepared and put into action in a very short time.”
The Alternate Minister for the Environment and Energy, Socrates Famellos, said, “We are producing a basic modern framework for a change in the management of waste and the utilization of the resources it produces for the benefit of society. In this way, we are solving significant environmental and public health problems as well as supporting local development with recycling and reuse.
With the new funding tools, local authorities will be able to plan modern works. The ten studies that we are funding today will solve outstanding local issues and will provided jobs and valuable raw materials for the circular economy.
Very soon there will be funding for the updating of local plans and each municipality will have a tool to develop recycling, Green Spots and separate collection of organic waste. Local authorities are being encouraged to increase their pace. We all need to demonstrate trustworthiness and decisiveness.”

The funding for Corfu covers two studies: 70,000 Euros for the Waste Management Facility and 800,000 Euros for the location study for the construction of a new landfill, following the closure of the Lefkimmi landfill. These were announced at a recent council meeting and on Tuesday 30th January there will be a council meeting solely to discuss waste management in Corfu and for a vote to be taken on the acceptance of the funding.
