CORFU. Residents of south Corfu along with other organizations were out in force to contest the proposed licensing of Lefkimmi landfill.

Early this morning, demonstrators assembled at Lefkimmi Regional building and then at 11 o’clock, blocked the Messonghi Bridge as a symbolic gesture. There were chants of ‘Whoever signs will weep bitterly!’ and ‘Mayor. Liar. Resign and take your landfill with you!’

“We are ready for the Council meeting (NB: 30/1/17),” said the president of the Lefkimmi Society, Maria Kontomari. “We call upon all the people of Corfu to come to the meeting – the rubbish belongs to all of us!”

The Society also issued a declaration saying that “If the Mayor plans to use force and suppression before declaring a ‘state of emergency’ in Corfu, then he can think again. We demand that the Regional Environmental Services, from whom those responsible for the mess are hoping for a lifeline, produce a scientific report, as a matter of priority, on the contents of the woeful waste bales being stockpiled at Temploni.”
